The 53-man guess

The third preseason game is in the books and it’s time to speculate on the makings of the final 53-man roster, which needs to be finalized by September 5.

Quarterbacks (3 - Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb, Michael Vick)

Donovan McNabb and Kevin Kolb will be there, but after that things could be tricky for Andy Reid.

Does he keep Michael Vick on the roster so he can practice with the team if he’s suspended for the first couple of weeks of the season, or do you keep him off the roster and have him sit out practices?

Either way, things don’t look good for A.J. Feeley’s future in Philadelphia.

My guess is Reid releases Feeley so he can find work elsewhere before it gets too late, and keeps Vick on the roster so he can continue to get reps in practice.

Running Backs (4 - Brian Westbrook, LeSean McCoy, Leonard Weaver, Eldra Buckley)

Westbrook, McCoy, and Weaver are all obvious choices to make the team.

Lorenzo Booker has been terrible from the get go in Philly, and his preseason performance hasn’t been any better. He hasn’t shown the hands or elusive moves we all thought he’d bring from Miami when the Eagles acquired him, and he has no shot at making this team.

It comes down to Kyle Eckel and Buckley.

Reid could take Eckel as a second fullback, but Weaver’s ability to run the ball on short-yardage essentially  nullifies Eckel’s role from last season. Buckley, although he looked like an undrafted rookie on Thursday, has shown some flashes of being a decent runner, and if the Eagles think he’s more of a contributor on special teams than Eckel he’ll be the choice.

Wide Receiver (6 - DeSean Jackson, Kevin Curtis, Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant, Hank Baskett, Brandon Gibson)

It pains me not to list Reggie Brown as one of the six receivers the Eagles retain, but his salary and corresponding performance just don’t add up. I’m hoping Reid and company can at least turn him into a draft pick before the season begins. So much for my prediction 3 years ago that he’d be a poor man’s Marvin Harrison.

Baskett stays on because of his blocking and special teams play (and his HOT wife coming to games). Gibson is a guy who may spend a lot of weeks on the inactive list on game days but has shown he could be another Avant-type possession guy down the road.

Tight Ends (3 - Brent Celek, Rob Myers, Tony Curtis)

The Matt Schobel era is mercifully over, as the oft-injured free agent signee will not be back in 2009. Curtis is a pure blocker - something the Birds haven’t bothered with at this position for a very long time.

Offensive Lineman (10 - Jason Peters, Shawn Andrews, Stacy Andrews, Todd Herremans, Jamaal Jackson, Nick Cole, Max Jean-Gilles, Mike McGlynn, King Dunlap, Winston Justice)

No real surprises here. Justice has really taken advantage of Shawn Andrews’ absence and played well at right tackle. Ditto that for Dunlap, who performed admirably while Peters was on the shelf. McGlynn is versatile enough, and Reid probably loves the guy’s tenacity. Look for one of the Birds’ two draft picks - Fenuki Tepou or Paul Fanaika to make the practice squad.

Defensive Lineman (10 - Trent Cole, Darren Howard, Victor Abiamiri, Chris Clemons, Jason Babin, Mike Patterson, Broderick Bunkley, Trevor Laws, Dan Klecko, Juqua Parker)

Parker squeaks in despite the fact he got busted for pot this preseason. He better not get comfortable though - he could be the last guy on the roster if injuries crop up during the season.

Bryan Smith hasn’t shown any of the burst they hoped for off the edge, and when you’re undersized you better be fast and/or strong (see Dwight Freeney). Smith doesn’t seem to be either.

Linebackers (6 - Joe Mays, Akeem Jordan, Chris Gocong, Omar Gaither, Moise Fokou, Matt Wilhelm, Tracy White)

Losing Stewart Bradley kills the Eagles. He was by the far the most talented player in that group, and his absence has shown during the preseason. Here’s hoping some combo of Mays, Gaither, and maybe Fokou can fill the void. Wilhelm’s hold on a roster spot is tenuous. White is there strictly for special teams - which looks real shaky already. Maybe it wasn’t just Rory Seagrest last season?

Cornerbacks (4 - Asante Samuel, Sheldon Brown, Ellis Hobbs, Joselio Hanson)

Jack Ikegwunou could be practice squad-bound, as could Dimitri Patterson. Both have potential but are caught behind a very deep and talented bunch.

Safeties (4 - Quintin Mikell, Quintin Demps, Sean Jones, Victor Harris)

Harris hasn’t set the world on fire, but his ability to play special teams and both S and CB gives him the advantage over Ikegwunou and Patterson.

Special Teams (3 - David Akers, Sav Rocca, Jon Dorenbos)

No surprises here.

2009 Eagles Draft: Who to Watch at the Senior Bowl

The annual Under Armour Senior Bowl is set to kickoff down in Mobile, Alabama at 6PM this Saturday. Unfortunately, quite a few top senior prospects have passed on the game.

Top Senior No-Shows

  • Aaron Curry - LB - Wake Forest
  • Duke Robinson - OG - Oklahoma
  • Eugene Monroe - OT - Virginia
  • Jason Smith - OT - Baylor
  • Brian Orakpo - DE/LB - Texas
  • James Laurinaitis - LB - Ohio State
  • Tyson Jackson - DE - LSU
  • Javon Ringer - RB - Michigan State
  • Michael Johnson - DE - Georgia Tech

For guys like Curry, Monroe, and Smith not attending is reasonable. But for guys like Laurinaitis, Orakpo, Jackson, and especially Johnson (who may have an injury), no-showing has got to throw some doubt in NFL teams’ minds. These guys all have question marks that they could’ve answered with a good week of practice.

With those absences in mind, for Eagles fans already with an eye on April’s draft here’s a couple of names you might want to keep tabs on:

Guys Who Won’t be There When the Eagles Pick in the First Round (Picks 21 & 28)

  • BJ Raji - DT - Boston College
  • Brandon Pettigrew - TE - Oklahoma State
  • Rey Maualuga - LB - USC
  • Michael Oher - OT - Ole Miss

Oher is doing well in practices - so much so that the chances he slips to 21 are growing slimmer.

Top Prospects Who Will be There

  • Brian Cushing - LB - USC
  • Larry English - LB/DE - Northern Illinois
  • Alex Mack - OC - California
  • Clay Matthews - LB - USC
  • Alphonso Smith - CB - Wake Forest

Linebacker is not a need for the Eagles, but Mack is the best OC prospect in the draft. With Jamaal Jackson’s play noticeably slipping Mack might be a viable option at 28. Smith is impressing in Mobile and could be a contributor immediately if Joselio Hanson signs elsewhere.

Middle Round Possibilities

  • Nic Harris - LB/S - Oklahoma
  • William Beatty - OT - Connecticut
  • Shawn Nelson - TE - Southern Miss
  • Ron Brace - DT - Boston College
  • Antoine Caldwell - OC - Alabama

Harris is attempting to convert to OLB after playing 4 years at S at OU. Could help right away on special teams and may eventually be useful covering TE’s and RB’s in certain situations. Beatty is a big tackle with lots to learn. A year behind a resigned Tra Thomas, learning and bulking up could pay off big. Nelson is a tough player who is having a big week. Brace played in the shadow of Raji at BC but he’s huge (6-3/333) and hard to move in the middle. The Birds could use some more depth at DT. Caldwell has been playing some OG this week along with his natural OC spot. He was also the Alabama team captain. You can win with guys like that.

Finding Jamaal Jackson’s Replacement Should be Center of Eagles’ Attention

I was just too disgusted to write anything last night after watching the Eagles - thanks to inept play calling - fail to score on 4 tries inside the 5 yard line. Infuriating.

But what I want to write about now is something that I’ve been thinking since late last season - Jamaal Jackson is killing this team. I know most people don’t notice the center - and that’s usually a good thing - but Jackson’s poor play is becoming more and more noticeable as teams exploit him game after game. The Bears, like the Steelers before them, blitzed up the middle again and again. They didn’t test the outside, they went right for the Eagles’ weakest link - Jackson.

In all fairness last night, Jackson was also playing next to Max Jean-Gilles at RG, who made his share of olé blocks, and only proved just how valuable Shawn Andrews really is.

Jackson either lacks the physical ability or mental acumen to be effective, and beginning last season has been exposed time and again.

I know the draft is not on the mind of anyone except a couple of Eagles scouts right now, but with 2 picks in the first round it may be wise to shore up the middle of that line with someone like California’s Alex Mack or Arkansas’ Johnathan Luigs.

I don’t mean to sound like Jackson is the sole problem the Eagles have - there’s lots of people to blame (Andy Reid’s play-calling being first on my list) - but Jackson is consistently a weak spot and the offensive center position - long a problem in Philadelphia - needs to be focused on when the time is right.
